Actively shaped innovation campus

A campus near Basel where companies, research and frontier infrastructure come together, building on Swiss stability.

Live

The first building on campus and its technological core. It houses offices, the PHOENIQS AI supercomputer and the IonQ quantum computer operated by QuantumBasel.

Live

An existing office building, home to the campus hospitality provider, the Canton of Basel-Landschaft and other organisations.

Under construction

The future headquarters of Straumann Group.

Live

The campus’s energy hub: a substation connects it to the grid, and the first battery energy storage system stores and balances electricity on site.

Proof

Frontier technology delivered in partnership with leading research and industry

Quantum computing, AI, and quantum-enhanced machine learning are not distant promises. They are operational here, running on infrastructure built for real-world computational demands.

The potential of quantum technology in the context of energy efficiency

A new QuantumBasel and IonQ study, accepted for IEEE Quantum Week 2026, suggests quantum computers could become more energy-efficient than classical GPUs for certain AI workloads once systems pass roughly 34 qubits — an "energy inflection point" that could matter for how AI is powered.

FAQ

Good questions. Clear answers.

What is uptownBasel?

uptownBasel is an actively curated innovation campus in Arlesheim, around ten minutes from Basel. It brings together quantum computing, AI and the organisations turning these technologies into real-world solutions, on infrastructure that is already operational.

What makes uptownBasel unique?

The technology is not a promise, it is on site: an IonQ Forte Enterprise quantum computer (since December 2024) and the PHOENIQS sovereign AI supercomputer (since June 2026), powered by the campus's own substation and battery energy storage. Organisations on campus are deliberately selected so that technology, expertise and real challenges meet in one place.

Who is uptownBasel for?

For organisations that use quantum computing and AI to develop real-world solutions – and advance the technologies themselves along the way. Some bring the technology, some the expertise, some a concrete challenge to solve. What matters is not the sector, but the contribution to the ecosystem.

What is happening at uptownBasel?

Organisations on campus are already turning quantum computing and AI into results, from peer-reviewed research to proofs of concept with global companies. Our Pioneer Stories show what this looks like in practice, and new projects are added as they are completed. All of this runs on infrastructure that is already in place.

What role does sustainability play at uptownBasel?

Sustainability is built into the infrastructure. The campus runs its own substation and on-site battery energy storage, and a new energy centre with around 2,000 m² of solar façade is being built. Once connected, it will feed waste heat from campus computing into the regional heat network. The campus is pre-certified under the Swiss SNBS Areal sustainability standard.

How can I become part of uptownBasel?

It starts with a conversation about your challenge or your technology. From there, we identify where you fit into the ecosystem, connect you with the right partners and move towards a pilot on campus.
